We work with many other agencies and organisations, both in New Zealand and internationally, to meet New Zealanders’ daily transport needs.
In some cases, we invest together in the network. In others, our partners and stakeholders manage relationships with customers on our behalf.
While the relationships vary, they depend on us and we depend on them to get things done.
Where we fit in the transport sector
The NZ Transport Agency is one of a number of government agencies operating in the transport sector. Our role is to provide a vital link between government policy-making and the operation of the transport sector.
Some of our partners
To provide the best possible services to our customers and stakeholders, we work very closely with:
- transport operators
our service delivery agents, who, through their 4000 outlets, support us to process motor vehicle and driver licensing transactions
transport committees, regional councils and territorial local authorities, which are responsible for implementing transport projects and other activities funded through the National Land Transport Programme
suppliers, including contractors and consultants
the New Zealand Police, who we fund and work with to provide a range of road policing services
the Ministry of Transport, which is responsible for leading the development of strategic transport policy and monitoring performance of the sector’s Crown entities and industry groups
other central government and local government organisations.

We are involved in industry forums and groups, such as the Hawke’s Bay & Gisborne Heavy Transport Forum .
Stakeholder perceptions survey
The stakeholder perceptions survey is a way of measuring how well we are doing in our relationships with our partners and stakeholders, and it helps us identify areas that we need to work on.

International visitors to the Transport Agency
We receive a number of requests to host visits from groups based all over the world, interested in the New Zealand experience of working in the transport sector.

Please consider the following when making an enquiry to visit:
- We don’t host visits in the months of October to February. This is a particularly busy period, and includes summer holidays in New Zealand – key staff may not be available.
- We need to receive visit requests at least eight weeks before a proposed visit.
- Visits should preferably not exceed three days.
- The recommended visiting group size is no more than 10 people. If you are using an interpreter, consider limiting your group to five people.
