Rosebank Road on-ramp weekend closure and on-ramp diversion

Major closures overnight Saturday 19 September on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound (weather permitting)

The Causeway Upgrade Project involves raising and widening approximately 4.8km ofFrom 7 pm we will begin to connect the Northwestern motorway.  The Causeway Alliance has raisednewly constructed southern bridge to the harbour side of the citybound motorway across the causeway andexisting Whau River Bridge.  This is now ready to start moving traffic oncalled a bridge “stitch” and involves pouring concrete to this section.  This will provide space so construction onconnect the next section of motorway can begin.  To enable this traffic switch there are two upcoming pieces of work on the Rosebank Road citybound on-ramp. structures.  The concrete takes about 12 hours to gain sufficient strength.

1. Rosebank Road citybound on-ramp weekend closure

8pm Friday 25 September to 5am Monday 28 September

As part of thisvibrations from passing traffic switchwill impact on the Causeway Alliance needshardening process, two westbound lanes need to move the Rosebankbe closed overnight from Patiki Road citybound on-ramp, raise the area whereon-ramp to the Te Atatu Road westbound exit.

What do I need to know?

  • Drivers will be unable to enter the motorway using the Patiki Road westbound on-ramp or take the Te Atatu Road westbound exit.
  • Detours will be in place
  • One westbound lane will remain open because it is temporarily reconfigured and runs on the other side of the bridge.
  • The cycleway will remain open.

The Rosebank Road on-ramp will be closed during a weekend so the Rosebank Road on-ramp connected to the new, raised section of motorway.

Please note that this is weather dependent and may happen the following weekend, Friday 2 October to Monday 5 October.

2. Rosebank Road citybound on-ramp diversion

From 5am Monday 28 September for approximately 4 weeks

Following the work completed during the weekend closure the Rosebank Road on-ramp will remain open but will link directly through to the Great North Road exit.

Drivers will temporarily be unable to enter the city bound motorway from the Rosebank Road on-ramp for a maximum period of 4 weeks.  This will enable us to continue to raise the citybound motorway.

Please note that this is dependent on the above work being completed and may happen the following week, from Monday 5 October.

There are two reasons why the Rosebank Road on-ramp will be diverted through to Great North Road:

  1. The difference between the newly raised level and the existing motorway level is too great to bring traffic from lane 1 down on to the motorway, and,
  2. There is insufficient “weave” distance near the Great North road off-ramp to enable vehicles in lane 1 to merge safely with vehicles in lane 2 – see the graphic below.

Temporary for 4 weeks from late September.

To help reduce disruption, these works have been timed to include the September/October school holiday period when traffic flows are lighter.

Construction on the required lanes will happen as quickly as possible so the motorway access can re-open and any disruption is kept to a minimum.

Detour options

During this time there will be a number of alternative options to enter the motorway.  The best option will depend on the time of day and where you are travelling to and from.
