Contractors will start the first stage of the Wilson Avenue to Fourth Avenue works next Tuesday 10 February with the permanent closure of the intersection between Western Hills Drive and Wilson Avenue West.
“We’re excited to start this year getting another of the improvement projects in WhāngāreiWhangarei underway – it means we can deliver on what we’ve promised and provide the community safer and easier access through the city,” says the Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Brett Gliddon.
The work includes widening the existing highway, upgrading of footpaths and the relocation of utilities. The Transport Agency is also working with the WhāngāreiWhangarei District Council (WDC) to construct a new link road between Fourth Avenue and Kauika Road.
In addition to the closure of the Wilson Avenue West intersection next week, there are a number of changes that will affect how people get around the area. These changes include:-
- From Sunday 1 March, the Link Road between Fourth Avenue and Kauika Road will be opened.
- From Monday 9 March to Sunday 22 March, Fourth Avenue will be closed for construction work.
- From Sunday 29 March, Fourth Avenue will become a left in/left out turn only onto Western Hills Drive (SH1).
The works are due to be completed at the end of the year.
“The support our projects have received from the people of WhāngāreiWhangarei has been great, and it is an important part of being able to deliver these projects successfully,” Mr Gliddon says.
The Transport Agency is working with WDC to improve the state highway. In all, there are five projects planned to help manage growing traffic numbers, improve safety and make travel easier for locals and visitors travelling in and around Whāngārei. Whangarei. The improvements also include improved safety for people who walk and cycle.
The remaining two projects are Tarewa Road and Kensington Avenue to Manse Street.
