The Transport Agency delivered a suite of improvements at the SH1 Hill Street intersection in the summer of 2014/2015 to improve safety and traffic flow.
What?
Widening the southbound approach on SH1 and increasing the capacity of the left turn into Matakana Road by separating the left turn lane – completed .
Widening the northbound approach on SH1 and increasing the capacity of the right turn into Matakana Road by extending it back to the Shoesmith Street intersection – completed .
Removing the southbound right turn from SH1 into Hill Street – now closed – please use Hudson Road and Falls Road to access Hill Street.
Constructing a 3-metre wide shared pedestrian and cycle path between Hudson Road and Hill Street – completed.
Improving the connection between Sandspit Road and Elizabeth Street – completed .
How?
To widen the southbound approach we have closed the southbound right turn from SH1 into Hill Street by removing the right turn lane. Removing the lane gave more space for construction while still keeping traffic flowing through the intersection. An alternative route to Hill Street is available via Hudson Road and Falls Road. Please do not use Albert Street.
Cost?
The improvements cost an estimated $1m and were included in the2014-15 State Highway Plan .

We held an open day on Saturday 16 August 2015 from 10am to 2pm at the Old Masonic Hall in Warkworth to share more information about the improvements. If you couldn't make it along, you can read the posters .
Not a final solution
We accept that these improvements are only an interim measure for the Hill Street intersection. We continue to work with Auckland Transport to develop transport solutions that will support Warkworth’s future growth as identified in the Auckland Plan.
