Cycling in Gisborne contributes to improving transport options, particularly for those without a vehicle, providing a more efficient and integrated transport network, and improving health, economic and social outcomes.
Over the next three years the Gisborne District Council, together with Tairāwhiti Roads and the NZ Transport Agency, will further develop a dedicated walking and cycling network around and across Gisborne that provides safe connections between schools, recreation areas, business centres and residential areas.
The Urban Cycleways Fund will help accelerate the completion of the Wainui-CBD route, including improved cycle facilities on both the state highway and the local road network.
These upgrades will be complemented with education and promotion through the Bikes in Schools programme.

The following project will receive urban cycleways funding
2015-2018 project
Wainui to CBD and local connections
This joint NZ Transport Agency, Tairāwhiti Roads and Gisborne District Council project will provide 10.65km of cycleways to extend the existing facility from Wainui through Kaiti and into Gisborne’s CBD. The project also includes a separated cycle facility over Gladstone Bridge.
It will connect with employment areas and schools in the CBD and provide local road links to schools in the area adjacent to the route.
Benefits
This project will provide safer and more connected facilities for people cycling to the Gisborne CBD, separating users from heavy commercial vehicles along the main corridor into town. It will offer a more comfortable cycling route for over 3000 students within 500m of the facility, including those travelling from Kaiti to the high schools in the city. It will encourage more students to travel by bike and will also encourage more residents to cycle to work and for recreational and short utility trips. This cycleway is expected to attract over 800 users each day.
Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2016 and be completed by mid-2018.
