Road works like these don’t have to upset your summer holiday travels, if you take a little time to plan that trip before you leave.
This is the time of the year when weather is generally warm and settled enough to get this work done. However, more road works can cause delays but these can be reduced if you think ahead. The Transport Agency is encouraging South Island drivers to be smart and plan ahead with their holiday trips to stay safe and arrive on time.
Road works, around larger centres such as Christchurch and at holiday hot spots including Queenstown and Wanaka, can be frustrating for people wanting to make the most of their summer holiday break.
You can stay ahead of the summer works game by jumping online at www.nzta.govt.nz/summerjourneys for up-to-date information on road works and detours. Or you may prefer to call 0800 444 449, or head down the social media route, and check out the Transport Agency’s Facebook or Twitter accounts.
Each summer, road crews are out there at the sharp end putting in the work to make our roads safer, and create more predictable journeys. This means more people are out working on South Island roads, and drivers being more alert and keeping an eye out for them. One small thing motorists can do that can make a big safety difference is slowing down at road work sites.
Everyone has a role to play in reducing harm on our roads, so we’re asking people to be patient and heed temporary speed restrictions. They are in place to keep road workers safe and to protect the work they are carrying out.
Good planning is the key to a safer and more predictable journey this summer. A great place to start your planning is www.nzta.govt.nz/summerjourneys
