In 2014, the Prime Minister announced $100 million additional funding for the Urban Cycleways Programme. This is designed to take full advantage of all funding sources, including local government and the National Land Transport Fund, to enable high-quality projects to get underway much sooner than may otherwise have been possible.

$9.92 million was allocated to progress the first set of projects in January 2015. These projects are already underway in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The remaining $90.08 million will be invested between 2015 and 2018.

On 25 June 2015 the Prime Minister and Minister of Transport jointly announced the 2015-18 Urban Cycleways Programme projects at an event in Rotorua.

Together with investment from local councils and the National Land Transport Fund, the 2015–18 projects provide a total of $333 million to expand and improve New Zealand’s cycling network.
