Cycle routes will inevitably need to cross the road at some point between intersections (i.e. in the midblock area). This may require interaction with motorised traffic and/or pedestrians.
Crossings create a higher risk situation for cyclists than when travelling along a midblock facility. Choosing and designing an appropriate crossing to accommodate people cycling requires careful consideration of a number of factors such as the type of facility between intersections and the target usersof the facility.
Design guidance for the following crossing types is provided:
- Uncontrolled crossings (kerb extensions, median refuges, raised platforms, Kea crossings and zebra crossings)
- Signalised crossing
- Grade separated crossings (overbridge and underpasses)
